16:9 is not a resolution, it is a shape. It describes the relationship between width and height, 16 units across for every 9 units down, and nothing more. That is why a small 1280x720 clip and a massive 7680x4320 wall display are both called 16:9: they hold wildly different pixel counts yet share the exact same proportions. So when someone asks for 16:9 in pixels, the honest answer is that there is no single number. There is a whole family of resolutions, and the one you want depends on how sharp the image needs to be. What 16:9 actually means in pixels
A ratio only becomes a resolution once you fix one side. Pick a width, and the 16:9 height follows automatically. To turn a width into its matching height, multiply by 9 and divide by 16. Take a width of 1920 pixels:
1920 x 9 / 16 = 1080
So a frame that is 1920 pixels wide at 16:9 is 1080 pixels tall, the resolution the world knows as 1080p. The same recipe scales in both directions. Double the width to 3840 and the height doubles to 2160. Halve it to 960 and the height halves to 540. As long as width and height keep that 16 to 9 relationship, the shape never changes, only the sharpness does.
The common 16:9 resolutions
Almost every screen, video, and streaming standard you meet is built on 16:9. Here are the ones you will run into most often, from the entry-level HD size up to 8K, each with the name people actually use for it.

Notice the pattern in the widths: 1280, 1920, 2560, 3840, 7680. Divide any of them by 16 and multiply by 9 and you land exactly on the height beside it. 1280 gives 720, 2560 gives 1440, 3840 gives 2160. They are the same shape photographed at higher and higher pixel counts, which is why content jumps cleanly between them without any cropping or black bars.

Compute height or width for any 16:9 size
You are not limited to the standard resolutions. Any width works as long as the height matches. The two formulas are mirror images of each other. When you know the width and need the height:
height = width x 9 / 16
When you know the height and need the width, flip the fraction:
width = height x 16 / 9
Say you have a container 1600 pixels wide and want it perfectly 16:9. Then 1600 x 9 / 16 = 900, so the height is 900 pixels. Working the other way, a 720 pixel tall banner at 16:9 needs a width of 720 x 16 / 9 = 1280. Both formulas are just the ratio rearranged, so pick whichever side you already know and solve for the other.
Keep the numbers even
9:16 in pixels, the vertical version
Phones, Reels, TikTok, and Stories all use 9:16, which is simply 16:9 turned on its side. To get a vertical resolution, swap the two numbers. The tall counterpart of 1920x1080 is 1080x1920. The math is identical, it just runs the other way: for a vertical frame you multiply the width by 16 and divide by 9 to get the taller height.
- 1080x1920 is the vertical twin of 1080p and the standard for full-screen phone video.
- 720x1280 is the lighter 9:16 size, matching 720p flipped upright.
- 1440x2560 is the sharp 9:16 option for high-resolution phone screens.
If you ever need to move a design between landscape and portrait, you do not change the shape, you only rotate it. 16:9 and 9:16 are the same proportions viewed from two orientations.
Resolutions that look like 16:9 but are not
A few popular screen sizes sit close to 16:9 without matching it exactly, and assuming they do will leave you with a slightly stretched image or thin black bars. Two show up constantly:
- 1366x768 is the classic budget laptop panel. True 16:9 at 1366 wide would be 768.375 tall, so 768 is a hair off. The real ratio is about 1.779 against the 1.778 of 16:9, close enough to look right but not a clean fit.
- 1920x1200 is a 16:10 screen, not 16:9. Its ratio is 1.6, taller than 16:9. Fill it with 1920x1080 content and you get letterbox bars top and bottom.
The quick test is the formula from earlier. Multiply the width by 9, divide by 16, and see whether you get the stated height. For 1920 you get 1080 and it checks out. For 1920 at a height of 1200 the numbers do not agree, which tells you at a glance that the screen is a different shape.
