Overview
What this calculator does
Paste any text and get an estimate of how long it takes to read silently and to say out loud. You can adjust the reading speed, see a separate speaking-time estimate for scripts and speeches, and view word, sentence, and paragraph counts — all updating as you type.
The math
How reading time is calculated
Reading time is simply word count divided by reading speed:
minutes = word count / words per minute
The average adult reads silently at around 230 words per minute, so a 1,000-word article takes about 4.3 minutes. Dense or technical writing reads slower; light fiction reads faster.
Pick the right pace
Reading speed by audience
| Words per minute | Best for | |
|---|---|---|
| Slow | 150 wpm | Technical, academic, or ESL readers |
| Average | 230 wpm | General audience, most blog posts |
| Fast | 300 wpm | Skimming, experienced readers |
For a blog "X min read" label, the average (230 wpm) setting is the standard choice. For instructional or technical content, the slow setting sets more realistic expectations.
Two different speeds
Reading vs speaking time
People read silently much faster than they speak. Clear, natural speech runs about 130 words per minute — roughly half the silent reading speed. That's why the speaking estimate is longer, and why it matters for anyone writing to be heard rather than read.
- A 5-minute speech is roughly 650 words
- A 10-minute talk is about 1,300 words
- A 60-second video script is around 130-150 words
- A 20-minute presentation is roughly 2,600 words

Common questions
How long does it take to read 1,000 words?
About 4 to 5 minutes silently at average speed (230 wpm), or roughly 7-8 minutes read aloud. The exact time depends on the reader and the difficulty of the material.
How many words is a 5-minute speech?
About 650 words at a natural speaking pace of 130 words per minute. Slow down for emphasis and pauses, so aiming for 600-650 words is safer than packing in more.
What is the average reading speed?
Most adults read silently at 200-250 words per minute. We default to 230 wpm. Speed-readers can exceed 400 wpm, but comprehension usually drops at very high speeds.
Why is my speaking time longer than reading time?
Because speaking is slower than silent reading — about 130 wpm versus 230 wpm. The same text takes nearly twice as long to say out loud as to read in your head.
Does punctuation affect the estimate?
The estimate is based on word count, which is the main driver. Heavy punctuation and complex sentences slow real reading slightly, so for difficult text the slow setting is more realistic.
