What this calculator does
Work out how many hours and minutes are between two clock times, add or subtract time from a time, and total a weekly timesheet. It deducts breaks, handles overnight shifts, and shows decimal hours — the format payroll systems use. Everything runs in your browser.
The core feature
Hours between two times
Enter a start and end time and the calculator returns the gap. From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes. Subtract a 30-minute lunch and the worked time is 8 hours. The result is shown three ways:
- Hours and minutes (8h 0m) — the human-readable format
- Decimal hours (8.00) — what payroll multiplies by your rate
- Total minutes (480) — useful for fine-grained tracking

Decimal hours conversion
Payroll multiplies decimal hours by your hourly rate, so knowing the conversion matters. Minutes divided by 60 give the decimal:

Common questions
How many hours is 9 to 5?
From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours. With a typical 30-minute or 1-hour unpaid lunch, paid working time is 7.5 or 7 hours.
How do I add hours to a time?
Use the add/subtract tab, set the starting time, choose Add, and enter hours and minutes. The calculator returns the resulting clock time and flags if it lands on the next or previous day.
What is 8.5 hours in hours and minutes?
8 hours 30 minutes. The 0.5 is half an hour. Multiply any decimal portion by 60 to get minutes: 0.5 × 60 = 30.
How do I calculate time and a half?
Calculate your worked hours here, then multiply overtime hours by 1.5 times your hourly rate. For example, 4 overtime hours at a $20 rate is 4 × $30 = $120. Our Salary Calculator can help with the rate conversions.
Does it work for part-time and irregular shifts?
Yes. Enter any start and end times, including different times each day in the timesheet. There's no assumption of a standard schedule.
