Enter a start and end time and the calculator returns the gap. From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes. Subtract a 30-minute lunch and the worked time is 8 hours. The result is shown three ways:

Payroll multiplies decimal hours by your hourly rate, so knowing the conversion matters. Minutes divided by 60 give the decimal:

How many hours is 9 to 5?

From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours. With a typical 30-minute or 1-hour unpaid lunch, paid working time is 7.5 or 7 hours.

How do I add hours to a time?

Use the add/subtract tab, set the starting time, choose Add, and enter hours and minutes. The calculator returns the resulting clock time and flags if it lands on the next or previous day.

What is 8.5 hours in hours and minutes?

8 hours 30 minutes. The 0.5 is half an hour. Multiply any decimal portion by 60 to get minutes: 0.5 × 60 = 30.

How do I calculate time and a half?

Does it work for part-time and irregular shifts?

Yes. Enter any start and end times, including different times each day in the timesheet. There's no assumption of a standard schedule.

Payroll and timesheets need minutes written as a decimal, not as clock minutes. Divide the minutes by 60, then add the result to your whole hours. This hours counter lookup covers the values a time calculator uses most often.

For example, 7 hours and 45 minutes in decimal is 7.75, because 45 divided by 60 is 0.75.

How many hours is from 9 to 5, 8 to 5, or 8:30 to 5? These are the shift spans people search for most. Gross hours count the full clock span, and the lunch columns subtract a typical unpaid break.

So 9 to 5 is 8 hours before lunch, and 8 to 5 is 9 hours. Subtract your unpaid break to get paid time.

To calculate worked hours with a lunch break, take your clock-out time, subtract your clock-in time, then subtract the unpaid break. Unpaid breaks do not count toward paid hours, so they come off the total. Say you clock in at 9:00 AM and clock out at 5:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch:

• 5:30 PM - 9:00 AM = 8h 30m
• 8h 30m - 0h 30m lunch = 8h 00m paid

That comes to 8.00 decimal hours for payroll. A paid break stays in the total, so only subtract breaks that are unpaid.

When a shift ends the next day, the end time reads lower than the start time, which can look like a negative result. Add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting so the answer stays positive. For a 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift:

• 6:00 end + 24 = 30:00
• 30:00 - 22:00 start = 8h 00m

So 10 PM to 6 AM is 8 hours, not a negative number. The calculator applies this automatically whenever the end time is earlier than the start time.

Payroll multiplies decimal hours by your rate, so hours and minutes have to become a single decimal number. Keep the whole hours, divide the minutes by 60, and add the two together. This time to hours conversion is what turns a timesheet into a paycheck.

• 7h 45m: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7.75 hours
• 6h 15m: 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25, so 6.25 hours
• 8h 20m: 20 ÷ 60 = 0.33, so 8.33 hours

How many hours is 8 to 5?

From 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 9 hours. With a 1-hour unpaid lunch that is 8 paid hours, and with a 30-minute lunch it is 8 hours 30 minutes.

How do I calculate hours with a lunch break?

Subtract your clock-in time from your clock-out time, then subtract the unpaid break. For 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch, that is 8h 30m minus 30 minutes, which comes to 8 hours.

What is 7 hours 45 minutes in decimal?

It is 7.75 hours. Divide the 45 minutes by 60 to get 0.75, then add the 7 whole hours. Payroll systems use this decimal form to multiply by your rate.

How do I calculate hours across midnight?

Add 24 hours to the end time, then subtract the start time. A shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM works out to 8 hours once you treat 6:00 AM as 30:00.

What is 80% of 8 hours?

80% of 8 hours is 6.4 hours, which is 6 hours 24 minutes. Multiply 8 by 0.8, and note that 0.4 of an hour is 24 minutes because 0.4 × 60 = 24.
