Overview

What this calculator does

Work out how many hours and minutes are between two clock times, add or subtract time from a time, and total a weekly timesheet. It deducts breaks, handles overnight shifts, and shows decimal hours — the format payroll systems use. Everything runs in your browser.

The core feature

Hours between two times

Enter a start and end time and the calculator returns the gap. From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes. Subtract a 30-minute lunch and the worked time is 8 hours. The result is shown three ways:

  • Hours and minutes (8h 0m) — the human-readable format
  • Decimal hours (8.00) — what payroll multiplies by your rate
  • Total minutes (480) — useful for fine-grained tracking

For payroll

Decimal hours conversion

Payroll multiplies decimal hours by your hourly rate, so knowing the conversion matters. Minutes divided by 60 give the decimal:

Crossing midnight

Overnight shifts

End time before start time

When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight. A 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift is correctly counted as 8 hours, not a negative number. This is essential for night-shift, hospitality, and healthcare workers.

Add up the week

Weekly timesheets

The timesheet tab lets you enter a row per working day — start, end, and break — and totals the whole week. It's a quick way to tally hours for an invoice or to check your paycheck. The total shows in both hours-and-minutes and decimal format.

Common questions

How many hours is 9 to 5?

From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours. With a typical 30-minute or 1-hour unpaid lunch, paid working time is 7.5 or 7 hours.

How do I add hours to a time?

Use the add/subtract tab, set the starting time, choose Add, and enter hours and minutes. The calculator returns the resulting clock time and flags if it lands on the next or previous day.

What is 8.5 hours in hours and minutes?

8 hours 30 minutes. The 0.5 is half an hour. Multiply any decimal portion by 60 to get minutes: 0.5 × 60 = 30.

How do I calculate time and a half?

Calculate your worked hours here, then multiply overtime hours by 1.5 times your hourly rate. For example, 4 overtime hours at a $20 rate is 4 × $30 = $120. Our Salary Calculator can help with the rate conversions.

Does it work for part-time and irregular shifts?

Yes. Enter any start and end times, including different times each day in the timesheet. There's no assumption of a standard schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time. From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes. If you take a 30-minute lunch, the worked time is 8 hours. The calculator does this and shows decimal hours (8.0) for payroll.

How does it handle overnight shifts?

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight. For example, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is correctly counted as 8 hours, not a negative number.

What are decimal hours?

Hours expressed as a decimal instead of hours and minutes. 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 decimal hours; 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25. Payroll systems usually multiply decimal hours by the hourly rate, so this format is handy for calculating pay.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25, 45 minutes is 0.75. The calculator shows both formats so you don't have to do the math.

Can I total a whole week?

Yes. The timesheet tab lets you add a row per day with start, end, and break, then shows the weekly total in both hours-and-minutes and decimal format.

How is this different from the date calculator?

This tool works with clock times within a day (like 9:00 to 17:00). The Date Duration Calculator works with calendar dates (days, weeks, months between two dates). Use this for work hours and shifts, that one for date spans.
