Overview

Convert JPG to PNG instantly in your browser

JPG (also written JPEG) is a lossy format optimized for photographs. Every time a JPG is saved, a small amount of detail is permanently discarded. PNG is lossless, meaning every pixel is preserved exactly. When you convert a JPG to PNG, you stop the quality loss from compounding, but you do not recover any detail that was already lost in the original JPG. The conversion still has real value when you want to edit an image multiple times, add transparency, or work on a file that should never be re-compressed.

This converter handles single files and batches, processes everything locally in your browser, and never sends your images to a server. The output is a clean, full-quality PNG ready for editing in Photoshop, Figma, GIMP, or any other graphics tool.

Step-by-step

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. 1

    Add your JPG files

Drag JPG or JPEG images into the upload area, or click to browse. You can drop a single file or many at once. Supported extensions include .jpg and .jpeg from cameras, phones, and editing software.
  2. 2

    Convert

Click the convert button. PNG is a lossless format, so quality settings do not apply. Each file is converted in your browser and shown in the results panel below.
  3. 3

    Download

Save individual PNGs with the download icon next to each file, or grab everything at once with the download all button. The original file names are kept, only the extension changes to .png.

Why convert from JPG to PNG?

The most common reason is to lock in the current quality before editing. If you are about to crop, color-correct, or composite a JPG and save the result back to JPG, the file will lose more detail with every cycle. Converting to PNG first means edits and re-saves do not add additional loss. Once you are finished editing, you can convert back to JPG for the final output.

Another common reason is to add transparency. JPG cannot represent transparent pixels at all, but PNG supports both binary and gradient transparency through its alpha channel. If you need to remove a background, the workflow is: convert JPG to PNG first, then erase the background using your editor of choice.

Use cases

When to convert JPG to PNG

Editing in Photoshop or GIMP

Avoid generation loss when applying filters or adjustments by working in PNG and only exporting JPG at the end.

Preparing assets for design tools

Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD all prefer PNG for imported images that may need transparent backgrounds later.

Removing the background of a photo

PNG is required for any image that will eventually have transparent pixels. Convert first, then mask.

Archiving important originals

Convert irreplaceable photos to PNG before applying edits so the source remains lossless.

Common questions

Will my image gain quality?

No. Converting from a lossy format to a lossless format does not recover any detail that was already discarded by the original JPG compression. The PNG you get is an exact copy of the JPG you started with, just stored in a format that will not lose any further detail on subsequent saves.

Why are my PNG files so much larger?

PNG is lossless, so it cannot use the aggressive compression tricks JPG uses on photos. A 500 KB JPG might become a 3 MB PNG. This is normal and expected. If file size matters, convert back to JPG when you are done editing, or use WebP for a middle ground.

Does the converter strip metadata?

The converter writes a fresh PNG using the visual pixel data only. EXIF metadata such as camera make, location, and timestamps from the original JPG is not carried over. This is often what you want when sharing photos online, since EXIF can include precise GPS coordinates.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert JPG to PNG?

PNG is lossless and supports transparency. It's better for editing, layered designs, and graphics with sharp edges.

Will the file size grow?

Yes, often significantly. PNG is lossless, so it can be 2 to 5 times larger than the equivalent JPG.
