Aspect ratio is one of those numbers you see everywhere, on camera settings, monitor spec sheets, video export dialogs, and social media upload rules, but few people explain what it actually means or how to work it out. The good news is that the whole concept comes down to one simple idea and two short formulas. This guide explains what aspect ratio is, how to calculate and simplify it from any pixel dimensions, how to find a missing width or height, and which ratios matter for video, photography, and social media.
What aspect ratio actually is
Aspect ratio is the relationship between the width and the height of a rectangle, written as W:H (width first, height second). It describes shape, not size. A 16:9 image is wider than it is tall, in the proportion 16 units across for every 9 units down. That is true whether the image is a tiny thumbnail or a giant billboard.
Because a ratio is about proportion, many different pixel sizes share the same aspect ratio. A photo that is 1280 x 720 and one that is 1920 x 1080 look identically shaped on screen, they are both 16:9. Only the resolution (the total number of pixels) differs.

How to calculate an aspect ratio from any size
To turn a pixel size into a clean ratio, you divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor (GCD), the largest whole number that divides evenly into both. This is exactly the same process as simplifying a fraction.
Take a Full HD screen of 1920 x 1080. The GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120. Divide both sides:
1920 / 120 = 16 and 1080 / 120 = 9, so the ratio is 16:9.
If you do not know the GCD off the top of your head, you do not have to. Keep dividing both numbers by any common factor until you cannot go further. For 1920 x 1080 you might divide by 10 to get 192:108, then by 4 to get 48:27, then by 3 to get 16:9. The order does not matter, you always land on the same simplest form.
Watch for near misses
1366 x 768 (a very common laptop screen) simplifies to 683:384, which is roughly 16:9 but not precisely. That tiny mismatch is why some video shows thin black bars on those screens.How to find a missing width or height
The more common real-world task is the reverse: you know the ratio you want and one dimension, and you need the other. The two formulas are:
height = width x ratioHeight / ratioWidth
width = height x ratioWidth / ratioHeight
Say you want a 16:9 video that is 1920 pixels wide. Plug it in: height = 1920 x 9 / 16 = 1080. So the frame is 1920 x 1080. Want a 16:9 banner that is 1280 wide instead? 1280 x 9 / 16 = 720, giving you 1280 x 720.
It works the other way too. If you need a 16:9 image that is exactly 900 pixels tall, then width = 900 x 16 / 9 = 1600, so the size is 1600 x 900. This is the core of every 16x9 resolution calculator and 16:9 pixel calculator, just two multiplications and a division.
The common aspect ratios and where they are used
A handful of ratios cover almost everything you will meet. Here is what each one is for.
- 16:9 - The modern standard. HD and 4K video, computer monitors, laptops, TVs, and YouTube all use it. This is the default for most screens made in the last fifteen years.
- 4:3 - The old standard. Classic TVs and monitors before flat panels, many point-and-shoot and Micro Four Thirds cameras, and Apple iPads. Slightly boxy compared to 16:9.
- 21:9 - Ultrawide. Cinematic movies and ultrawide gaming and productivity monitors. Marketing calls it 21:9, though the true ratio of common ultrawides is closer to 64:27.
- 1:1 - Square. Classic Instagram feed posts, profile pictures, and album art. Equal width and height.
- 9:16 - Vertical. Instagram Reels and Stories, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. It is 16:9 turned on its side for phone screens held upright.
- 3:2 - Photography. Most DSLR and mirrorless cameras shoot 3:2, matching the proportions of 35mm film. Standard 4x6 inch prints are 3:2.

The pattern is clear: 1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080, 2560 x 1440, and 3840 x 2160 are all 16:9, while 640 x 480, 800 x 600, and 1024 x 768 are all 4:3. When you scale up within a ratio, the shape stays identical and only the detail increases.
How to resize an image while keeping the aspect ratio
The one rule that keeps images from looking stretched or squashed is simple: change width and height by the same factor. If you cut the width in half, cut the height in half too. In practice, decide on the new width, then compute the matching height with the formula above.
For example, to shrink a 4000 x 3000 photo (which is 4:3) so it is 800 wide, the new height is 800 x 3000 / 4000 = 600, giving 800 x 600, still 4:3. If you instead forced it to 800 x 500, the photo would look horizontally squished because you changed the proportion.
